Reed vs. The Town of Gilbert (PDF) (US Supreme Court Decision, 2015) identified areas in which jurisdictions may need to amend their sign code, specifically in relation to 'off-premise' signs. The recent ruling does not allow jurisdictions to have criteria based upon the sign message. Regulations must be limited to location, duration, design, materials, etc.
Process & Project Timeline
The planning department will be working on the sign code update in conjunction with the Planning Commission during the 2017 work program. We will be holding a series of public meetings and multiple outreach efforts to gain input, suggestions, and preferred direction relating to the necessary amendments. The City's Planning Commission has met a handful of times on this topic in preparation for the public outreach and input.
